The Obama Factor in Michigan, North Carolina, New Mexico10/2/08
Michigan was meant to be a battleground state but Obama is up by 10%. New Mexico is one of four Western states that were supposed to be "up for grabs" but Obama is up by 8%. And Survey USA says that NM "looks less-and-less like a toss-up". There were polls that had McCain up by about 30% in North Carolina but Rasmussen Reports now has a statistical dead heat.
Again, it all comes down to the poor economy. But McCain is a horrible candidate too. I mean he talks about being a reformer and a maverick but yet he has done the worst job ever of trying to distinguish how his policies are any different from President Bush's economic policies. He has done a horrible job of trying to relate to the problems the voters are going through... Mister "I don't know how many houses I own" and Mister "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" is not the kind of candidate the average Joe is going to vote for when he/she is worried about the economic news. And when he was asked today why folks are supporting Obama in the light of the grim financial news, he responds "Life isn't fair"... Ummm, hahaha.
According to the General Election Virginia poll by Mason Dixon: The survey indicated that the nation’s shaky economy is Virginia voters’ top concern. Sixty-nine percent of those surveyed identified the economy and jobs as the “single most important national issue” in the election. According to the General Election Michigan poll by Public Policy Polling: Michigan’s been hit even harder than most places in the country by economic struggles over the last few years, and 69% of the state’s voters list the economy as their top issue. That’s higher than any other battleground state PPP has polled in. Obama holds a 54-37 lead among respondents who listed it as their biggest concern.
