Thompson Scoffs at Nixonian Allegations Fred Thompson is not a candidate to be trifled with. According to the Capital Survey Research Center/Alabama Education Association, a poll taken in 07-17-07 in Alabama showcases that republican nomination hopeful Fred Thompson sports a 34% share. Compiled on the USA Election Polls website, this puts him about 14% ahead of Rudy Giuliani, by many thus far considered to be the golden boy for the Republican Party in a field that is a bit weak when it comes to character, conscience, and commitment. Yet Mr. Thompson is not without his detractors. As a matter of fact, in more ways than one was he referred to as Nixonian, and historian Stanley Kutler once referred to him as being committed to the Nixon White House first and himself immediately second. For republicans this is not the most damning problem, however; instead, Fred Thompson’s proven link with the pro-abortion group National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association is by far more problematic to a party that seeks to court the religious right. While Thompson scoffs at the claim of being Nixonian, he does work hard to convince supporters that he is not a straw man for special interests, but that instead he does have conservative leanings at heart. Showcasing his votes in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, and a securing of the United States borders prior to engaging in any form of immigration reform. It is debatable if the latter will win him much favor with dedicated supporters of the administrations, yet when it comes to potential voters, it is only too clear that they are getting the message loud and clear.
