Romney Ropes Straw Poll, But Is It Enough? 8-13-07 Mitt Romney, not even counting the early straw poll, has been the favorite Republican candidate in the sought after Iowa polls since May. His finances have been aimed at luring Iowa his way, like many presidential candidates, next he’ll set his sights on New Hampshire and South Carolina. He is said to be worth almost two hundred and fifty million dollars, which helped him to shell out more money for his straw poll campaign than any other candidate. Hillary Clinton recently joined him in launching her ad campaign in the state, something that was lonely to Romney. Tailing behind several other candidates – ones who elected not to participate in the early straw poll – hasn’t deterred him at all. The candidates who did not participate in the straw poll simply did not have the assets or method of pulling together a campaign for the poll. Even though Romney won the early poll, the standings are the same as before with him behind Giuliani, Fred Thompson and John McCain. In hopes of keeping up with Romney, Giuliani will launch television campaigns in Iowa as well as New Hampshire and South Carolina. Lucky in his brushes with the media, Romney has not been burned much at all but this promises to change as the election barrels on. The early straw poll victory unfortunately will not make the campaign trail smoother to ride on because the leading candidates declined to join in. However, Romney and his staff did have reason to celebrate as the Iowa votes are highly coveted.
