From World Public Opinion (conducted: 4/25-5/12/09)

  • 67% of Egyptians have a negative view of the US.
  • 60% of Egyptians have either no confidence or not much confidence in Obama to do the right thing regarding world affairs.
  • 80% of Egyptians think it either probably or definitely a goal of the US to maintain control over oil resources in the Middle East.

This poll of 600 Egyptians was conducted in late April to early May, a month before Obama's speech in Cairo. And what it suggests is that Egyptians are highly suspect of both Obama and the United States.

I would suspect that as long as the United States operates missions in the Middle East, they will continue to be suspect about US policy. Because here's what the poll showed.

Egyptians think that the US (and Obama) wants to:

  • control oil in the Middle East (80%)
  • impose American culture on Muslim society (80%)
  • weaken and divide the Islamic world (76%)

And as long as the United States has a policy of imposing their will on other nations in the Middle East through force and.or occupation, they will look down on our behavior. This gives a bit more credence to the Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul philosophies that state the world will like us better if we just bring our troops home.
