Majority Say Government Will Not Run Financial Institutions Better

From Rasmussen (conducted: 3/24-25/09)

  • 67% say financial institutions will not run better under the federal government
  • 11% of Americans think a financial institution will run better if it's run by the federal government
  • 22% are not sure

» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat)

Amidst Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's pleas to the House Financial Services Committee for an exansion of federal government power over financial institutions, Rasmussen held a new poll concerning the very same topic. The polling agency found that a majority of Americans believe that the federal government will not run financial insitutions better than the private sector. These financial institutions include hedge funds, insurance companies, and the like.

Only 11% believe that the government can run these institutions better. Perhaps these people are afraid of the bureaucracy and corruption that will entail if the government takes over this industry.

To this author, the government should not be feared. The role of government is to protect and serve its citizenry. What makes some people corrupt does not mean it will corrupt others. We must not mistrust government, rather embrace its role in society.
