Pro Life Outpolls Pro Choice For the First Time5/15/09 From Gallup (conducted: 5/1-10/09)
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) For the first time in Gallup's history of taking a poll regarding the abortion issue, the amount of people who claim themselves to be 'pro-life' outnumber those who claim themselves to be 'pro-choice'. This interesting poll shows a shift from a steep contrast in the mid-90's, when specifically in 1995, 56% of those polled said they were pro-choice, while only 33% were pro-life. This is also significant because this author feels that this country is becoming more liberal than in years past. Interestingly, the liberal stand on this issue has been pro-choice, but as this data suggests, while Americans are becoming more liberal, their ideas and values on abortion suggest otherwise. To this author the abortion issue has been a tough one to consider. As a Catholic, all life should be protected, especially those in the womb. But, as a liberal, it is a woman's right to choose and if she chooses to abort a pregnancy that is her perogative, not anyone else's, let alone the government. Future polls need to be taken to see if this rise in the pro-life movement is real, or simply a statistical anomaly over the course of a few years.
